Konnichiwa, Bem-vindo, G’day, Kia ora… People often ask Anita where she is from and try to place her from her accent. Her passports declare that she is Australian/Kiwi (New Zealander). However, it was not until she moved to Melbourne at the age of 21 that she had ever lived in an English speaking country.
Anita was born and raised in the beautiful city of Kyoto, Japan. At 18 she taught herself Portuguese through pod-casts, and hopped on a plane to Brazil. Three challenging yet glorious years were spent in Sao Paulo where she studied Jazz and Brazilian music at Souza Lima, a feeder school for Berklee College of Music in Boston. Her older brother graduated from Berklee before moving to L.A. as a song-writer/performer. Their home in Japan had always been filled with music and Anita has been singing for as long as she can remember.
Once moving to Brazil, the pop/contemporary songs to which Anita had been accustomed gave way to the Latin American impact and these days she sings with more of a jazz flavor. The Brazilian influence has certainly colored her music and you will often hear her singing Bossa Nova.
Apart from Anita’s love of music, she has a keen interest in learning languages. She mostly speaks English, Portuguese, Japanese and Spanish. She is currently based in Melbourne where she is gigging, studying Jazz, and privately teaching voice.
