Cultural background

People often ask Anita where she is from and try to place her from her accent.  Her passports declare that she is Australian/Kiwi (New Zealander).

Anita was born and raised in the beautiful city of Kyoto, Japan.  She grew up in a house in the mountains (Mt. Hie) between Otsu and Kyoto city. Anita is forever grateful to her parents Annette and Bruce for having grown up in a home that was always filled with music and creativity. She has been singing for as long as she can remember.

Brazil

At 17 she heard a Brazilian Bossa Nova song called ‘Olhos nos Olhos’ by Chico Buarque and fell in love with the sound of the music and language which sparked her dream to one day visit Brazil.  A few months later she taught herself Portuguese through pod-casts and hopped on a plane to Brazil.  She spent the next three years in São Paulo where she studied Jazz and Brazilian music at Souza Lima, a feeder school for Boston’s Berklee College of Music.

Move to Melbourne

It was not until she moved to Melbourne at the age of 21 that she had ever lived in an English speaking country.  One day she was asked to attend the Order of Australia luncheon tribute to Sir John Monash with guest speaker Tim Fischer, AC.  She sang the Australian National anthem and then led the group in singing Walzting Matilda.  After this day she felt she had made Australia her new home, where she is currently based in Melbourne.

Passions

Apart from her love of singing and music, Anita loves language. She speaks English, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish. She enjoys listening to music in different languages and has even taught herself some songs in Polish - a language she would like to learn next. Growing up in the mountains, she has a strong desire to be out in nature and with animals. A lot of her inspiration comes from scenes and textures in nature. She enjoys teaching singing and language. When she isn’t working on her music, Anita enjoys cooking, baking, crafts and going fishing with her father.
