Brazilian / Jazz

At the age of 18 Anita taught herself Portuguese through pod-casts, and hopped on a plane to Brazil.  Three challenging yet glorious years were spent in São Paulo where she studied Jazz and Brazilian music at Souza Lima, a feeder school for Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 2011 Anita moved to Melbourne and majored in Jazz Vocal Performance at Monash University as well as completing a Diploma of Language in Japanese.

Apart from performing her originals, Anita often collaborates with 7-string guitarist Nick Watson in Melbourne. They performed together in New Zealand, at the Wellington Jazz Festival 2019 performing Samba, Bossa Nova and MPB (Brazilian Popular Music). Anita has a keen interest in languages. You may often hear her sing in Portuguese and English, or at other times in Japanese, or Spanish. A lot of Anita’s repertoire is music that came about under the military dictatorship - both her and Nick share a similar passion for music and lyrics, that originated out from social justice settings.
